Every horse, whatever its breed or job, depends on the same handful of essentials. Getting these right does not require expensive equipment; it requires consistency, observation, and planning.
Forage and water
A horse's digestive system is designed to process small amounts of fibrous food almost continuously. Long periods without forage can contribute to digestive upset and stomach problems. Clean water should always be available, and checked more than once a day in hot or freezing weather.
Movement and company
Horses are built to walk for much of the day. Turnout, exercise, and time with other horses support both physical and mental health. A horse kept alone and confined for long periods may develop stress-related behaviors.
Shelter and health
Protection from extreme weather, safe surroundings, regular hoof care, dental checks, vaccinations, and a parasite-control plan agreed with a veterinarian complete the picture. When something seems wrong, ask a veterinarian early.
