With good care, many horses live well into their twenties and beyond. Their needs change gradually, and responsible care changes with them.
Teeth and diet
Dental wear can make chewing hay difficult. Regular dental examinations and, where advised, softer or specially formulated feeds help older horses maintain condition.
Comfort and movement
Gentle, regular exercise and turnout help stiff joints. Extra warmth in cold weather and a comfortable, level place to lie down also help.
Planning ahead
Discuss an older horse's care, quality of life, and long-term plans with a veterinarian before difficult decisions become urgent.
