Many equestrian injuries happen not in the saddle but on the ground — while leading, grooming, or tacking up. A few habits greatly reduce the risk.
Let the horse know where you are
Approach at the shoulder, speak calmly, and place a hand on the horse as you move around it. Avoid standing directly behind a horse.
Lead correctly
Walk beside the horse's shoulder with the lead rope folded in your hand, never wrapped around it. Keep a safe distance from other horses.
Tie safely
Tie horses with a quick-release knot to a breakable point or tie ring, at a suitable height and length, and never leave a tied horse unattended for long.
